Well above at the moment that bus is the future for me at least. After the sad death of my wife Mary, I had to return to work. I needed to financially anyway, and sitting around has never been for me.
Originally I joined a local firm called New Adventure Travel with the hope of some coaching work. But it turned out to be mostly local work and I had been involved with that most of my life anyway and was looking for a change. I stayed with them a year and the job at National Express came up.
I think I ought to explain a bit about the biggest National carrier in the UK first. Although National Express is a huge company and has buses to over 900 cities in the UK as well as a European section, they actually own very few buses. Most of the coaches are franchised out into smaller firms who work for them. Think of it as McDonald’s on wheels!
My employer is actually
One of the biggest coach Travel firms in the area.
They took on the franchise when it was given up by another firm earlier in the year and have operated for about five months now.
They only do two routes that consists of seven buses a day to London Victoria coach station and two buses a day to Bradford. At the time of writing I am still waiting for training on the Bradford route but that should happen soon.
The work is a real change from my previous work and mainly enjoyable. London traffic is a real nightmare of course and so far my social life is suffering but on the whole I am glad I made the change.
I have about 18 moths before I can retire, and I hope that I can continue in this job. Whether I retire fully or work part time will depend on many factors including health of course.
I will close this section now and maybe come back to it when I have more to add.
